For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21

What is it that you desire most? Whatever that “it” is, “it” is directing your thoughts, actions, and feelings. What we desire most controls what we say, think, and feel. Or, as Matthew 6:21 phrases, what we treasure directs and steers our hearts.

This truth encourages us as believers to evaluate what our hearts are set on. As citizens of Christ’s kingdom in a world raging against God do we treasure his kingdom and work that will last for eternity? Or are we instead swayed by this world’s kingdom and its fleeting pleasures and treasures? Our thoughts, actions, and feelings will indicate what we treasure most, and what we treasure most will invariably lead to a profitable life or a wasted one.

As believers in this fallen world, we must take heed not to get swept up by this world’s value systems. There are a million things that tempt our hearts to treasure something above Christ and his kingdom work. There are a million things that tempt us to waste our life. But in response to this wide road to destruction, we must remember that our greatest treasure is wrapped up in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Treasuring Christ and his kingdom work here on earth is the only thing that matters in the end. It is the only thing that will last.

We must remember that there is a coming day when we will meet the treasure of our souls, Jesus Christ. In anticipation of this day we set our hearts on him and persevere. When he returns may he find a kingdom of people who treasure him above all.
