For those who have served well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 3:13 (CSB)

What are deacons? The non-technical use of this word in the Greek New Testament simply refers to servants. However, in the context of this passage, the term is used technically to refer to the church office of the church. These faithful individuals are lead servants who give themselves to meet needs in the body of Christ in a recognized role. The appointment to this office is a commission to lead in serving the local assembly.

Deacons who serve well acquire a good standing for themselves. What does this mean? The privilege to serve is the privilege to follow the example of the Master. As Jesus did, we are to love sacrificially (“washing the feet of the saints”). Followers of Christ will be known by their love for one another. With faithful service, deacons can earn a measure of respect and appreciation from the ones being served. Ultimately, Christ is honored in a church that serves well.

Deacons who serve well acquire great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. Application of the Gospel in ministry is played out in the trenches of service to one another. In other words, when deacons serve, they get unique opportunities to trust Christ and see God transform lives. Sincere faith produces good works and good works tend to reinforce faith.

Whether or not a church member is appointed as a deacon, every believer is called to serve. Doing so in a faithful manner will enable the church to fulfill its calling to preach the Gospel, disciple, and teach all nations the commands of Christ. Serving well is worth the cost.
